Julius Hangman is a chance compliment of socially conscious, poignant songwriting and witty, eclectic musicality. Stylistically, the sound of the music may be described as a modern rock mélange; a modified jazz vocabulary with a slight southern accent. Thoughtful vocal harmonies and stark lead guitar work round this trio out, making them one of the most promising bands in Charlottesville.

With special guest Josh Mayo. The show starts at 8pm/$5.

Our Touring Artists Series continues with The Hot Seats, formerly known as Special Ed and the Short Bus, and now fondly referred to as Richmond’s beloved absurdist stringband.
Reviewers say:
“The young five man acoustic band play with verve, vigour and a true feel for the roots of their chosen idiom. Which stilted critic-speak completely fails to convey the sheer fun and laughter of the show. If you like this sort of music, you must go. Everyone else should go and those who leave without having had a good time are just not the sort of people whom I would want to meet.” - BroadwayBaby.com, 2008
“BLUEGRASS, old-time, skiffle, jug band … stir them up vigorously, throwing in elements of zany vaudeville , add some unpredictable tics, then stand back and watch Special Ed & the Shortbus go.” - The Edinburgh Scotsman, 2008
“Their shows are veritable litmus tests for a crowd’s sense of humor. If you’ve ever answered yes to Frank Zappa’s question “Does humor belong in music?” then The Hot Seats are for you. They’re straight-up nuts when they pick and sing, and if you can get past the lovely freakishness of their stage act, you’ll find some real talent backing up the zaniness.” - Haymaker Productions (www.haymaker.com), 2003
“Slightly disturbing dada-esque Va.-based string band that’s one part Beefheart freakout and two parts trad jug-band.” - Connect Savannah, Savannah, GA, 2006
The show starts at 8pm/$12. Listen at www.myspace.com/thehotseatsrva.

North Carolinians have known Martha’s music for some time now, but in the past couple of years, she’s been finding a new audience throughout the southeast due to increased touring, her work on the Sony Classics film JUNEBUG, festival appearances, and numerous articles in the press. Martha and her band have opened for Lyle Lovett, played Merlefest, and are currently touring the east coast in support of the new disc “Sinner’s Prayer,” which features original Americana written by Martha and bandmate, Justin Poindexter. Although they are known for their ability to incorporate jazz, country, traditional, and rock standards into the live shows, it is their original music that fans appreciate most.

Sally Rose has been playing our stage since she was 12 years old, and it has been a real treat to hear this sweet songstress’s voice develop a size and depth that seems too big for its source, and a range that would give any diva a run for her money.
Julius Hangman brings breathtaking three-part harmonies and a spellbinding mix of covers and original material. This group has an engaging, spine-tingling sound that strikes us as one of the most refreshing new bands we’ve heard.
